Year 1 Writing Unit: The Odd Egg – Description

Brand new for 2025 is this awesome writing unit for KS1, specifically Year 1.

This unit uses Emily Gravett’s excellent book The Odd Egg to support children in building up to writing descriptively!

Designed to be used over a period of two weeks, there are a variety of vocabulary, oracy and writing tasks designed to build the children’s knowledge, understanding and application of the elements of the KS1 writing curriculum.

The unit covers a range of National Curriculum writing objectives including:

• Use adjectives to describe
• Begin to punctuate sentences using capital letters and full stops
• Use a capital letter for people, places and the personal pronoun I
• Join word and clauses using and
• Speak sentences aloud before writing
• Make predictions based on what has happened so far
• Sequence sentences
• Edit and improve work
• Read aloud their writing for others
