Year 2 Writing Unit: Little Red – Story Writing

Brand new for 2025 is this awesome writing unit for KS1, specifically Year 2.

This unit uses Bethan Woollvin’s awesome picture book Little Red as a stimulus to support children with writing their own fairytales and creating new book covers and blurbs!

Intended to be used over a period of four weeks, there are a variety of vocabulary, oracy and writing tasks designed to build the children’s knowledge, understanding and application of the elements of the KS1 writing curriculum.

The unit covers a range of National Curriculum writing objectives including:

• Use punctuation correctly: capital letters, full stops, commas for lists.
• Use expanded noun phrases to describe.
• Use subordinating and coordinating conjunctions.
• Learn and use adjectives, nouns and verbs.
• Write narratives about experiences of others (fictional).
