Year 5 Reading Fluency Assessment – Julia and the Shark (730 LM)
Brand new for 2023/24 is this fantastic reading fluency assessment resource. Modelled on the DIBELs reading fluency assessments, but written for a UK rather than US reader, and using a range of fantastic, age-appropriate books!
This resource features an extract from Julia and the Shark, by Kiran Millwood Hargrave, which has a lexile measure (LM) of 730.
There is a pupil extract and then an adult mark-sheet including script and space to record pupil name, date of assessment and assessment scores.
Across Year 5, pupils should be able to read texts with a lexile score between 730 and 870 at a rate of 110 words per minute to be considered a “fluent” reader.
Pupil fluency should be assessed as follows in Year 5:
Building Fluency (BF) – Able to read a text at the prescribed speed with a lexile score between 730 and 799.
Almost Fluent (AF) – Able to read a text at the prescribed speed with a lexile score between 800 and 849.
Fluent (F) – Able to read at text at the prescribed speed with a lexile score of 850 or more.
