Year 4 Fluency Friday - Autumn 1

Brand-new for 2025/26 is our FREDsTeaching Fluency Friday resource! The whole purpose of this resource is to develop the reading fluency of children in your classroom over an extended period of time.

Each session explores a bespoke piece of fiction or non-fiction, written to engage and educate young readers whilst at the same time giving them an opportunity to build their reading fluency over time.

Each text has been given a lexile level, a word count and a target reading time, with the time matching exactly how long it would take a fluent reader at that stage to read the piece.

Year 2 – 70 wcpm

Year 3 – 90 wcpm

Year 4 – 110 wcpm

Year 5 – 130 wcpm

Year 6 – 150 wcpm

Each text also comes with a set of quick comprehension questions.

There are clear instructions on how to use the resource effectively and a range of ideas for different activities that you could do to build reading fluency over time. The resource has been written so that it can be used either whole-class or as a targeted intervention to support rapid progression.
