LKS2 Writing Unit: Rapunzel – Alternative Traditional Tale

Brand new for 2025/26 is this awesome writing unit for LKS2.

This unit uses the hilarious picture book Rapunzel by Bethan Woollvin as a hook and WAGOLL (what a good one looks like).

Designed to be used over a period of three weeks, there are a range of daily vocabulary, grammar and writing tasks, building up to a final outcome of writing an alternative version of a traditional tale about Rapunzel!

The unit covers a range of National Curriculum writing objectives including:

– Develop positive attitudes towards writing.

– Discuss writing similar to what they’re planning.

– Extend sentences using conjunctions, adverbs, prepositions.

– Organise paragraphs around a theme.

– Use nouns, noun phrases, adjectives, verbs, similes.

– Read aloud with appropriate intonation and volume.

– Use punctuation correctly (capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, commas in lists).

– Use varied sentence structures.

– Use inverted commas to punctuate direct speech.

– Use conjunctions, adverbs, prepositions to express time, cause, place.

– Evaluate and edit by assessing the effectiveness of their own writing.

– Plan writing by discussing and recording ideas.

– Draft and write by organising paragraphs around a theme.

– In narratives, create settings, characters, plot.

– Proofread for spelling and punctuation errors.

There are daily writing opportunities, oracy sections to encourage sharing and discussion, exploration of WAGOLL examples, daily feedback slides and time to plan, write and edit written work.
