Year 1 Writing Unit: The Enormous Turnip – Short Story

Brand new for 2025 is this awesome writing unit for KS1, specifically Year 1.

This unit uses a version of the classic story The Enormous Turnip and a book called Patten’s Pumpkin by Chitra Soundar to support children in building up to writing a short story!

Intended to be used over a period of three weeks, there are a variety of vocabulary, oracy and writing tasks designed to build the children’s knowledge, understanding and application of the elements of the KS1 writing curriculum.

The unit covers a range of National Curriculum writing objectives including:

• Writing sentences
• Using ‘and’ to join
• Use adjectives to describe
• Sequence events from a story
• Predict
• Plan a story
• Edit and improve writing
