Year 2 Writing Unit: Dear Earth - Description

Brand new for 2025 is this awesome writing unit for KS1, specifically Year 2.

This unit uses the beautiful book Dear Earth, by Isabel Otter and Clara Anganuzzi, to support the children in creating some descriptive writing.

Intended to be used over a period of two weeks, there are a variety of vocabulary, oracy and writing tasks designed to build the children’s knowledge, understanding and application of the elements of the KS1 writing curriculum.

The unit covers a range of National Curriculum writing objectives including:

• Use adjectives to describe
• Begin to punctuate sentences using capital letters and full stops
• Join word and clauses using because
• Recognise and use verbs, nouns and adjectives
• Write expanded noun phrases
• Use commas to separate items in a list
• Write in the past tense
• Speak sentences aloud before writing
• Make predictions based on what has happened so far
• Sequence sentences
• Edit and improve work
• Read aloud their writing for others
