Year 3 Fluency Friday 2.0 – Autumn 1

This is our brand-new, industry leading FREDsTeaching Fluency Friday 2.0 resource! The whole purpose of this resource is to genuinely and purposefully develop the oral reading fluency of children in your classroom over an extended period of time.

Each session explores a bespoke piece of fiction or non-fiction, written exclusively for FREDsTeaching Ltd and designed to engage and educate young readers whilst at the same time giving them an opportunity to build their oral reading fluency over time.

There are clear instructions on how to use the resource effectively and a range of ideas for different optional activities that you could use to build oral reading fluency over time. The resource has been written so that it can be used either whole-class or as a targeted intervention to support rapid progression.

The resource now comes with a ‘Teacher Notes’ page which gives you a Fluency Focus for each piece, tells you exactly what pupils should be practising and explains why the Fluency Focus matches the text! There is also a child-friendly version of the Fluency Focus to share with your class.

Each text has been given a text challenge level, a word count and a target reading time, with the time matching exactly how long it would take a fluent reader at that stage to read the piece. You can see the cwpm target for a fluent reader in each year group below:

Year 2 – 70 cwpm

Year 3 – 90 cwpm

Year 4 – 100 cwpm

Year 5 – 110 cwpm

Year 6 – 120 cwpm

We have also included a new Words to Unlock slide for each resource, which showcases two words to model and rehearse with your class that could potentially otherwise be barriers to automaticity. The words include a syllable check, correct pronunciation and a definition.

A  set of quick comprehension questions, and the answers to those questions is also include!
